Top 10 Unfavorable Interior Design Mistakes And How To Avoid Them

by planetofinterior

We are pleased to welcome you to our new blog post. In today’s blog post, we will be talking about some common interior design mistakes and how to avoid them.

Space Planning

Not planning space is one of the most common interior design mistakes. It is essential to plan your area before buying anything. Take a moment to perceive the whole room, take measurements, and plan how you would like your home to look. You can get a piece of paper, write down some things you want to buy, and make a sketch which is a great way to avoid any of the interior design mistakes.

You should also pay attention to the size of your home and think about what suits you best for that specific size, to avoid any interior design mistakes. After you’ve perceived everything, it is time to make a detailed plan of how you’ll achieve everything you want.

Space planning is one of the most essential interior design elements because everything starts with planning your space. It’s the base of every project.

Another one of the very common interior design mistakes in interior design. It is essential to choose a style that you will love. You can also combine different interior design styles to create a space that will suit your taste. So, how to find a type that you’ll like?

Like in most cases, when you need to choose something, you need to do some research. Look for different styles with different vibes and different pieces of furniture and décor.

You can find a lot of inspiration online, or you can consult with an experienced interior designer to help you even further in avoiding any interior design mistakes. Once you’ve decided which style suits you best, it is essential to pick the right furniture and decorations, but be careful while shopping. You might be asking yourself, “why do I need to be careful while shopping?” The answer is quite simple; something that looks good in a store might not look good in your home.

The furniture pieces in a store are combined with decorations that match the furniture style. So, it’s essential to perceive what a specific item will look like in your home. If you don’t have a lot of space, you should consider getting some pieces to make it seem more significant.

Some pieces that you see can look perfect, but sometimes you won’t achieve what you want by buying them. Everything mentioned makes us conclude that you need to make a plan and stick to it because you are creating your living space, and it is essential to feel good in your home, and also avoid interior design mistakes.

Wrong Sized Furniture

Buying wrong-sized furniture is another of the common interior design mistakes in interior design. Wrong-sized furniture can completely ruin the whole look of a particular space. When creating a nice living space, the main goal is to make it cohesive and well-balanced. Furniture size can affect the cohesiveness of space, so how do we choose the right furniture for our home?

Like in most cases, we need to make a plan. Hiring a professional is a great decision. If you have the opportunity, you should consider hiring someone who can make a 3D render of the space that you want to create.

This will help you to understand what size of furniture to get. If you can’t find a piece of furniture that matches your needs, you can always contact a local workshop that will make a custom piece just for you. Creating a cohesive space doesn’t just make your home look more beautiful; it also makes you feel better about your home and proud of what you’ve created. So the wrong sized furniture is also one of the interior design mistakes.

Wrong Paint

Choosing paint is one of the last things to create space. Once you’ve picked the right furniture, decorations, and interior design style, it is time to choose the right paint. There are a lot of factors that can determine what paint to choose, such as the color of the furniture, exposure to natural light, artificial lighting, etc. There are thousands of different color tones nowadays, so it’s pretty easy to make a mistake while choosing the right one.

Bonnie Krims, an architectural color consultant, explains:

“Always remember that while there are thousands of paint chips at the store, there are only seven colors in the paint spectrum,”

says Krims, referring to red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet (what Color Theory 101 students are often taught to remember by the mnemonic device, “Roy G. Biv”).

“I always suggest eliminating a couple even before going to the paint store.”

The most important thing about choosing a paint color is the feeling you want in a room. Cool colors such as green, blue, or white are usually perceived as peaceful and soothing. On the other hand, warm colors such as red, orange, or yellow create a dramatic and energetic feel. That is the authentic charm of choosing the right color.

Wrong Size Of The Rug

Rugs are a great way to add an extra textural element to your home, and to avoid interior design mistakes, but you have to pay attention when it comes to the size of the rug. You don’t want a tiny rug that barely covers your coffee table, but you can also go wrong with a huge rug. There are two variants of rug sizes.

The first variant is a rug that covers only a specific area (for example, a rug that only covers the area underneath the dining table and the chairs). The second variant is a rug covering the whole area underneath the furniture. This type of rug is great for bigger spaces, while the first one can work for both bigger and smaller spaces. If you have flooring that you want to show off, then you should stick with a smaller rug.

Hanging Art Too High Or Too Low

When avoiding interior design mistakes, artworks are a great way to decorate your home. Hanging art too high or too low is one of the widespread interior design mistakes, but it can be easily fixed. The artwork should be placed at about eye level so you can perceive it naturally and appreciate its beauty. If you have more artworks of different sizes, you should arrange them so that their centers are aligned. A great way to test out the position of the artwork is to trace and cut out the shape of the artwork and stick it to the wall using some tape. After that, you can hang the artwork and appreciate its true beauty.

Having Only One Source Of Light

Lighting is one of the critical aspects when it comes to creating space and avoiding interior design mistakes. Many people often don’t pay much attention to lighting, but good lighting can take a nicely designed space into a splendid room. One source of light isn’t enough to make a space look great. Low lighting doesn’t give much depth to a room, which concludes that the area can look dull. Having layered lighting is a perfect way to give depth to your place and make every element pop. The easiest way to create layered lighting is to provide your space with these light sources:

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting provides the general illumination to a space. There are plenty of objects which provide ambient lighting. The most common ones are chandeliers and floor lamps.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is meant to highlight a specific object. This is a great way to fulfill the overall look of a particular space. The primary sources of accent lighting are spotlights and scones.

Task Lighting

Task lighting is a variant of lighting that provides essential illumination for everyday tasks like reading, writing, cooking, etc.

Once you’ve combined these three variants, you will make your home look genuinely engrossing. Every piece of home décor will be highlighted, and you will also make your home practical, with one less of interior design mistakes.

Creating A Flat Space

Not having height variations in your home can look flat and dull. Height variations are just as significant as lighting to avoid creating a flat space. If you want to create a great composition, you should consider getting pieces of furniture with different heights. Tall plants, floor lamps, and bookshelves create an excellent composition. Focusing on designing a space as an entirety is essential to not make it look flat and dull.

Wrong Furniture Arrangement

Furniture arrangement is an essential element of every home. You should style your space with different pieces of home décor if you don’t have enough room for another piece of furniture to avoid some of the interior design mistakes. The most important thing about furniture arrangement is to avoid placing a piece of furniture in a way that blocks the view of the whole room. Some of the things to look out for when arranging furniture are:

Choosing A Focal Point

A focal point in interior design refers to the area where your eye is immediately drawn. This can be a coffee table or a unique piece of home décor. An excellent focal point can turn your room from good to great.

Don’t Push Furniture Against The Walls.

Pushing furniture against the walls can create a bunch of weird dead space in your home. Keeping the furniture at least twelve inches from the wall is essential to create a cozy and inviting feel.

Pay Attention To Diversity To Avoid Interior Design Mistakes

Paying attention to diversity can affect the composition of the whole space. You should have smaller and bigger pieces of home décor in your home. It is important not to group all smaller bits or more significant pieces in one area. This can create an unsettling feeling and make a space look flat. Instead, combine the shapes and sizes for the best look.

Choose A Big Coffee Table

This rule doesn’t essentially apply for every space, but most times, a big coffee table is an excellent pick for many homes. An oversized coffee table doesn’t only affect the composition but also the practicality of a particular space. A more significant surface area gives you more freedom to put down your snacks and drinks or display your favored accessories.

Using Too Many Colors

Using too many colors can make your space look not cohesive which is also one of the interior design mistakes. Cohesiveness is vital in interior design because a cohesive home has a mesmerizing vibe and a welcoming look. You should choose a color palette before you start designing a space to avoid any interior design mistakes.

There are a lot of different color palettes, so it’s plenty to choose from. If you opt for a specific color that you like, let’s say, for example, green, then you should consider using different shades of that color, getting other pieces of home décor, getting plants, etc. Just remember to design the whole space as an entirety because that’s the only way to create a cohesive space with a pleasant feel.
